Strong classroom management skills are necessary in order to run a successful classroom. I hope to achieve an environment where students feel welcomed, safe, and secure. I want all students to feel valued and respected. To achieve these goals it is essential to set high expectations for all learners from the first day of school. I think that it is important to work alongside students when creating classroom rules to increase the effectiveness. Additionally, it is important to have strong lesson planning skills that incorporate clear directions and expectations to reduce the amount of corrective reminders. Additionally, the need for reminders will be dramatically reduced if students are engaged and actively participating in each lesson. Positive reinforcement and modeling are two additional strategies that I implement to manage my classroom. Emphasizing and modeling appropriate behaviors can encourage students to increase desired behaviors.
As a first year teacher I have gathered the following ideas that I would potentially implement in my future classroom:
Token system: I would like to implement a token system based on positive reinforcement to increase desired behaviors. Students would earn valued tokens in which they could save to "cash in" for a chosen reward. Potential rewards may include- sitting at the teachers desk, lunch with a friend in the classroom, or reading to the class.
